Per body: Laporta s opponents hold secret meetings to study how to stop them from continuing to serve
Laporta must convene the presidential election in 2026, when his six-year term ends on June 30. The chairman plans to run again and said: "We have done a good job and should continue." If he is re-elected, his next term will be five years, which was decided by the Commitment Conference held in October 2021.
It is currently impossible to determine when Laporta will convene the election, but he will not be the only candidate. On the one hand, Laporta is obviously a popular candidate; on the other hand, the identity of future candidates is still full of uncertainty. The biggest question is whether the opposition will unite.
In the last election, three candidates passed the necessary votes to enter the voting stage: Laporta, Victor Fonte and Tony Fresa. Among them, only the leaders of "Sí al Futur" are still actively opposing Laporta's work, and "Fidels al Barça" has abandoned his opposition to Laporta and closer to his club vision. Fonte will be the leader of the opposition, but not the only candidate who is interested in running for the election.
In fact, for months, the forces against Laporta have been working to form a strong opposition coalition. On Tuesday night, the leading potential candidate leaders held an informal meeting at a well-known restaurant in central Barcelona.
Several partners at the Barcelona club who want to change the current management of the board gathered together at 9 p.m. to discuss forming a unified opposition campaign. Xavi Bilajoa, a former candidate who was a member of Bartomeu's board of directors, attended the meeting, and Victor Fonte, who was also invited, was unable to attend due to professional reasons.
Join Camplubi, the leader of the "We Are a Voice" platform, also appeared at the scene. In addition, Ricard Fonte of the "Unity Barcelona" organization, and Enrique Perez Maas, a member of the Barcelona club and CEO of Parlem Telecom, also attended the meeting, who was also one of the main sponsors of the gathering. Although Mark Siria received the invitation, she finally chose not to participate. Another notable absentee was Victor Fonte, who decided to send a member of his campaign to attend instead.
At the critical moment of the dinner, that is, on the issue of union, there were still differences between the parties regarding who should be the leader of the group. This means further negotiation is needed to reach a final agreement. Due to the tight time, it was clear to all that it was necessary to unite if you want to win in the upcoming club presidential election.
