Ginobili was born on July 28, 1977 in Port Blanca, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was selected by the Spurs with the 57th overall pick in the second round in the 1999 NBA draft and officially joined the NBA in 2002. Ginobili spent all his NBA career with the Spurs, and he won the NBA championships in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014 with the team. Ginobili won the NBA Sixth Man in 2008, and was shortlisted for the NBA All-Star lineup in 2005 and 2011, and became the Spurs' steal king in 2018.

On August 28, 2018, Ginobili announced his retirement. On August 29, 2018, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg announced that he would establish August 30 of each year as Manu Ginobili Day. On March 29, 2019, the Spurs held a jersey retirement ceremony for Ginobili's No. 20 jersey. On September 25, 2021, the Spurs officially announced that Ginobili will join the Spurs management and serve as special counsel to the basketball operations department. On September 11, 2022, Ginobili was officially selected for the Ney Smith Basketball Celebrity Memorial.

Ginobili played 1,057 games in his NBA career, with only 349 starts, averaging 25.4 minutes per game, contributing 13.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.3 steals, with a shooting percentage of 44.7/36.9/82.7% in three events.

In the 2002 World Basketball Championship, Ginobili led Argentina to defeat the American Dream Team 5, and he was also selected for the World Championships' Best Team. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Ginobili led the Argentina team to defeat the American Dream Team Six and eventually won the Olympic gold medal. He was also awarded the MVP.
